Yesterday was Mother’s Day. I didn’t get to spend it with my mom since she lives in Houston…and I totally don’t. I love my mom. I mean, we all say that about our moms but…I REALLY do. Even though, the fact is, we don’t really have that much in common. She reads novels, plays bridge, and is very active in her church. I don’t do any of those things. However, there are some things about me that I am proud to say we very much have in common:
- My ability to connect with anyone at a cocktail party. My dad is actually like this too. So was my mom’s mom and my dad’s dad. So, this runs in the family…that special talent that allows you to be dropped in some random social situation and be able to make a friend outta someone who, on the surface, is entirely different from you. My brother has this ability too, now that I think of it. It’s our family superpower. But this is a Mother’s Day post so she gets all the credit.
- My sense of civic responsibility. Neither of us ever miss an election day. Even those weird little elections where all you are voting on is head of the County Parks Commission.
- My love of chardonnay. The oak-ier and buttery-er, the better.
My mom is a committed Chardonnay drinker. Always has been. So, when I thought about doing a Mother’s Day post in her honor, it was no surprise that the first question that popped in my head was “What cocktails can I make with chardonnay?” So, I searched around the internet and, damn, there are a lot of chardonnay haters out there! Check this video out from CHOW.
My good friend Mary, a somm, educator, and successful wine blogger, approves of my mom’s and my love of chardonnay. In fact, the last time I visited her in her home in Portland, she served me the best bottle of chardonnay I have EVER had in my life. Super fancy. She said she was honored to share it with someone who really appreciates Chardonnay. She says I should ignore the snobby chardonnay haters and keep doing what I’m doing.
In honor of (the day after) Mother’s Day, I am re-committing to my love of Chardonnay. My mom loves it. I love it. I love my mom. My mom loves me. Y’all can stop hating.
I did make that cocktail from the above hater video, by the way. It’s basically a Aperol Spritz with still wine instead of sparkling and orange instead of lime. I really liked it. It’s really friggin’ good.
See how easy it is not to be a hater?
